Tourist in My Own Town

Trevor Broad

Never have I felt like more of a tourist in my own town than now.  Sometimes I take a break from shooting portraits, fashion photoshoots, and set stills, grab my camera, and snap some landscape photos around the city.  I have never been a big fan of shooting events or taking random city shots but sometimes it's a welcome vacation from the pressures of producing and directing photoshoots.  And I admit, sometimes when I wander Vancouver behind the lens of my Canon I feel a bit like a tourist in a foreign space, discovering places and people for the very first time.  However, never have I felt this alien in my own back yard. Which is not to say it's a bad thing.  On the contrary, it's a welcome change to walk the streets of downtown completely clueless about what I will find around the next street corner.  Not only that, but to know everyone around me is in exactly the same headspace as me.  It's a refreshing vibe from residents and tourists alike.  So often in Vancouver cliques reign supreme and it's hard to meet new people and have new experiences.  The Olympics have broken this mindset, if only for a moment, and I am meeting people from all over the world as well as all over Vancouver.  I have met so many tourists in this short time but what is more surprising is how many Vancouverites I have met--many more than I would have had the Olympics not come to play in our backyard!

In my journeys thus far I have snapped some shots of random people and places.  As I said Im not really keen on these kinds of photos therefore I chose only a select few to post and they are nothing fancy.  If nothing else these photos simply reflect various photographic interests of mine outside of my usual fashion, portrait, set stills, and nature photography repertoire.
